Probe launched after car crash claims policeman's life

POLICE are investigating a culpable homicide case following a fatal crash on Saturday that claimed the life of a police officer on his way to work. It is alleged that the officer's state firearm was stolen from the scene.

SAPS KZN _ spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza, said police were investigating a case of culpable homicide after policemen from Verulam attended the two-vehicle accident scene on Jabu Ngcobo Road.

Magwaza said it was alleged that one vehicle was heading in the direction of Verulam, while the other was travelling towards Inanda.

“A member of the South African Police Service based at King Shaka International Airport was a driver of one of the vehicles, on his way to work and lost his life,’ Magwaza said.

He said that the police officer’s service firearm was not found on him.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said the incident occurred around 5.33pm when Rusa responded to an emergency call.
