TRIUMPH OF EVACUATION

EVACUATION in the London area has been carried out more rapidly than was expected. Those remaining to be evacuated to-day is smaller than on pre- vious days.

Immediately after Mr. Chamberlain’s dramatic broadcast to the nation, the Government yesterday announced a number of precautionary measures to prevent people crowding together and so increasing the casualty risks from air raids.

The numbers evacuated from London up to Saturday night—the latest figures available— were 485,900.

First day: Schoolchildren, 297,000. Second day: Schoolchildren, 57,000; mothers and under five, 129,000; expectant mothers, 2,900.
