A DNA test could save thousands of lives and billions of pounds by preventing dangerous drug reactions.

A study has pinpointed three genes that impact how the body processes medication. They could be checked for with a saliva or blood test.

Scientists want the NHS to routinely check if patients have these genes before prescribing certain drugs.

Previous research found adverse drug reactions caused about one in 15 acute hospital admissions and more than 5,000 deaths each year in England alone.
