Monty, Ike say peace needs discipline, comradeship

FIELD - MARSHAL Montgomery and General Eisenhower in victory messages to their troops yesterday both pointed to the achievements in war as symbols of what they could accomplish in peace ahead.

Monty urged his men to face the work that lies ahead with “the same fortitude that we faced up to the worst days of this war.”

“The world will not recover quickly from the upheaval that has taken place,” he said. “We have won the German war; let us now win the peace.”

Eisenhower stressed that this moment in London “the British soldier is grand.”
