Major success on and off the course after his divorce U-turn
Rory Mcllroy sank to the ground and shook with emotion as he etched his name alongside golf's all-time greats by finally winning the last remaining major tournament that had eluded him.
His victory on Sunday night at the US Masters ended his 11-year major championship drought and came after over-coming turmoil in his personal life.
The Northern Irishman, 35, wept tears of joy on the course as he embraced his wife Erica Stoll, who he had filed to divorce 11 months earlier.
The pair reconciled a month after his divorce documents cited an “irretrievably broken” marriage.
Rory and Erica, 37, celebrated his Masters triumph alongside their excited daughter Poppy, four.
His victory not only marked the culmination of a glorious renaissance for the sportsman, but it made him only the sixth player to ever achieve a career Grand Slam - winning all four of golf's major tournaments.
He joins that exclusive club alongside Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Rory is the first European on the list.
He finally slayed his demons by pipping England's Justin Rose, 44, to the Masters title in a dramatic sudden-death playoff. It was Rory’s 17th attempt to win the annual tournament.
Saying thanks as he wore the Green Jacket - awarded to Masters winners - he told the crowd: "Last but not least, to my left, my family, my team."
