Thousands line streets to say farewell to one of football's true all-time greats

- PHIL CARDY

He would fight his granny for a goal..

LAWMAN, King, hero... whatever they called him, they all turned out yesterday to remember the 5'9" forward who towered over the football world.

Manchester United and Scotland legend Denis Law was laid to rest yesterday after his death aged 84 on January 17, with tributes from across and beyond the beautiful game.

Old Trafford's other favourite Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson, fought back tears as he said: "He would fight his granny for a goal. He had so much courage.

A skinny guy standing by all those big defenders." He added: "Trying to place Denis in the pantheon of all time greats is a challenge. But it is made easier by Pele.

"He was asked if there was a British player who could get in the Brazil team.

imageHe said Denis Law - a fantastic tribute." Thousands had lined the streets of Manchester as fans of both United and City, where Law also played, said goodbye.

Sir Alex said: "He loved Scotland and he loved beating England.

"He once lined up before a game against England. He loved Nobby Stiles and Nobby worshipped him.

Nobby came bounding down the tunnel and wished Denis all the best.

"Denis gave him a withering look and let off a volley of abuse Nobby never forgot."

imageMourners at Manchester Cathedral included United's current boss, Ruben Amorim, alongside players Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

A piper played Flower of Scotland as the hearse arrived for the service and the crowds burst into applause as the coffin was carried into the cathedral.
