Medomsley detention death 'should be treated as murder'

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

THE death of a teenager at the notorious Medomsley detention centre should be investigated as murder over claims he was beaten up by staff, his family demand.

David Victor Caldwell was sentenced to three months for petty theft when he was just 18.

On his arrival on December 15, 1981, a report noted “no signs of any infection or injury”. David suffered from severe asthma and used an inhaler, but was declared fit for PE.

Around a fortnight later, when his sister Carole Kyle visited he told her bruising on his legs was caused by “the screws”, and that he got hit sometimes for not saying “Sir”.

But he begged her not to report it, claiming prison officers had warned him they would “kill him” if he did.
