£3m galleon to form new centrepiece of playground

A FULL-SCALE wooden ship is set to make an unusual journey to become part of a playground built in honour of the late Princess Diana.

Final touches are being made to the £3million attraction, which will be the new centrepiece of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground next to her old Kensington Palace home.

The play equipment was specially built in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, and staff from Royal Parks inspected the galleon in Germany before it is delivered to London.

Andy Williams, park manager for Kensington Gardens, said the upgraded playground will be "faithful to the spirit of Princess Diana". He added: "It really reaches to children's imaginations, it lets them set free in a safe space."
