CCC, Colts, Tamil Union join Police SC in semi-finals

LAST year’s losing finalist CCC, Colts, and Tamil Union won their final group matches played yesterday to join Police SC in the semifinals of the SLC Major Club 50-Over Tournament.

Tamil Union inflicted on Police SC their first defeat of the ongoing tournament when they beat them by seven wickets in a crucial group match played at the Police Grounds yesterday.

The win by Tamil Union saw them tie on 8 points each with NCC, but Tamil Union, with a better net run rate, finished second to Police SC in Group A and thus qualified for a place in the semifinals. The match winners for Tamil Union were spinners Tharindu Rathnayake (4/34), Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (3/27), and Vihas Thewmika (2/31), who bowled Police SC out for 144 in a 42-over game. In Tamil Union's reply, former Sri Lanka Under-19 skipper Sineth Jayawardena hit a 56-ball 87 (7 fours, 7 sixes) and shared an opening stand of 106 with Isivara Dissanayake (22) to put the contest beyond doubt, winning with 132 balls to spare.

CCC came up with a powerful batting performance to beat Nugegoda SWC by seven wickets under the DLS method at the CCC Grounds.
