Weight loss jabs 'may cut risk of dementia, stroke and addiction'

WEIGHT loss jabs such as Wegovy may reduce the risk of dementia by easing inflammation in the brain, scientists have found.

The drugs have been approved for the treatment of obesity and Type 2 diabetes as well as for prevention of heart problems and stroke in people who are overweight.

A major US study suggests benefits may extend even further to conditions including Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, pneumonia and addiction.

Researchers analysed data from two million people, including 215,000 taking weight loss jabs for diabetes.

Dr Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist and kidney expert, said: "Given the drugs' newness and popularity, it is important to examine their effects on all body systems to understand what they do and don't do."

Control

The findings highlighted some "previously unrecognised benefits" including a reduced risk of seizures and addiction to substances such as alcohol, cannabis, stimulants and opioids.
