'We may sue over eye test rule for over-70s'

CAMPAIGNERS are threatening to take the government to court over plans to make older motorists take special eye tests to keep their licence.

Ministers propose regular vision tests for the over-70s in a bid to reduce deaths on the road

Any new road safety rules should apply to drivers of all ages, according to pressure group Silver Voices.

But instead, it said ministers have "singled out" people over 70.

The group, which has 11,000 members, is not opposing the principle of eye tests but described the policy as "fundamentally discriminatory" and pointed out that the Equalities Act protects older people.

It also warned banning older drivers could prevent them seeing a doctor or buying essential groceries.
