At best, the retired teacher says it is "50/50" that pensioners will be able to continue to rely on the policy to push up the value of their pensions.

He said: "Britain doesn't offer older people a decent pension but with the triple lock in place it's a reasonable pension.

"The UK state pension is one of the meanest in the world."
