Thousands may face council tax increase

THOUSANDS of homeowners could face higher council tax bills as the Treasury considers a shakeup of property bands.

The proposal, being explored ahead of the autumn Budget, would involve creating new levels for more expensive properties.

It is all part of Chancellor Rachel Reeves's wider effort to raise revenue without breaking Labour's pledge not to revalue homes this Parliament.

Officials are understood to be considering introducing additional bands at the top end of the scale across England rather than launching a wholesale review of all property values, according to reports.

David Fell, lead analyst at estate agents Hamptons, said a selective approach may prove politically and practically appealing.
