Summer drought fear as river in wettest area is already 'bone dry'

DROUGHT fears are growing after a river in one of Britain's wettest spots dried up

With hosepipe bans thought to be on the way for some regions, shocking images show how the River Derwent, in the Lake District's Borrowdale Valley, has been reduced to just a dry bed.

Experts from the West Cumbria Rivers Trust said the valley is now suffering "prolonged drought conditions" from the recent warm spell.

They fear fish and insects will be badly affected with a "knock-on effect" for other species.
