Suicide spike for soldiers in worst Afghan battles

A VETERANS' minister has urged armed forces heroes struggling with their mental health: Put your hand up and ask for help.

Johnny Mercer spoke out as he revealed his fears for younger soldiers who fought in Afghanistan's bloodiest battles.

The ex-Army officer said a spate of suicides in 2009 and 2010, during the war's most brutal tours, was the first time veterans were more likely to take their lives than civilians.

A study earlier this year also said younger military personnel were more likely to commit suicide.

Mr Mercer said: "It affected several units who served at a specific time in Afghanistan, who were at a specific age. They were my cohort. It is all personal. It's the only reason I'm here. I am not particularly political.
