Starmer to tell Trump US must stop Russia from invading Ukraine again

SIR Keir Starmer has called for US help to ensure there is lasting peace in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister will deliver the message to Donald Trump in Washington next week that an American security guarantee is essential.

Sir Keir confirmed after meeting European counterparts at a summit hosted in Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday he was willing to deploy British troops as part of a peacekeeping force and that "Europe must play its role".

He added: "But there must be a US backstop because a US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again."

Sir Keir Starmer said he will ensure Britain will take a "leading responsibility". He said: "So I will go to Washington next week to meet President Trump and discuss what we see as the key elements of a lasting peace.

"We have to recognise the new era that we are in, not cling hopelessly to the comforts of the past. It's time for us to take responsibility for our security, for our continent."

Sir Keir said Kyiv's fate had wider implications. He added: "At stake is not just Ukraine.

"It is an existential question for Europe as a whole, and therefore vital for Britain's national interest.
