Dr Michael Spencer and wife Reena left their "entire household" at Safestore in west London while renovating a new home in Uxbridge.
After droppings were seen, it was found that rodents had attacked their possessions and the pair had to sort their goods to assess what was beyond repair for insurance purposes, court heard.
Within a weeks, both had symptoms of what was linked to infection by "rat-borne disease" a persistent cough, itchy eyes, a rash and exhaustion.
