Puberty blockers banned indefinitely due to risks

PUBERTY blockers used to treat children with gender dysphoria will be banned indefinitely outside clinical trials, the Government has announced.

A major review published earlier this year found there was "remarkably weak" evidence to support the use of the controversial hormone drugs. The temporary ban on private prescriptions has now been extended.

Dr Hilary Cass, author of the independent review of gender identity services for children and young people, described puberty blockers as "powerful drugs with unproven benefits and significant risks".

She added: "That is why I recommended that they should only be prescribed following a multi-disciplinary assessment and within a research protocol.
