'Protect our OAPs' plea as 1.9million live in poverty

ONE in six pensioners - a total of 1.9million - are living in poverty, research has shown.

Receiving benefits and the state pension will not be enough to protect more older people from "falling through the cracks" in future, according to the Fabian Society, which carried out a report into the crisis.

The think tank's Sasjkia Otto said: "It's a common misconception that all pensioners are well off, but this masks significant inequality.

"Neither the state pension nor benefits guarantee protection from poverty and many are falling through the cracks, especially those who are renting.

"This situation could deteriorate as the number of pensioners living in this sector increases."
