Mayor polls delay 'is risk to voters'

LABOUR has been accused of putting people at risk by delaying polls involving six million voters.

Tories claimed ministers were abolishing democracy "to avoid embarrassment" and humiliating defeats at the ballot box.

Local Government Secretary Steve Reed has cancelled mayoral elections planned for May 7. They are now pencilled in for 2028.

He is sticking by that despite a U-turn over plans to postpone 30 council elections in May. They will go ahead after a legal challenge.
