Rory admits 'clock is ticking' after a decade without win on biggest stage

RORY MCILROY not only wants a strong performance at this week's Players Championship but he needs one as he targets an end to his Major drought.

McIlroy began the year with a tie for second place in the Dubai Invitational and a fourth victory at the Dubai Desert Classic.

However, the Northern Irishman has finished no better than 21st in each of his four PGA Tour events.

The world No.2 will seek a second win at Sawgrass, starting today, and also contest the Texas Open immediately before next month's Masters at Augusta National.

A first Major title since 2014 would make McIlroy the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam following Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Asked if his recent form meant he needed or wanted a good week at PGA Tour headquarters, Mcllroy said: "Both probably.
