‘Labour is too blasé about farming and food security ...the stakes are too high’

A TOP Tory has told farmers Labour is too carefree about the threat of future food shortages.

Former foreign secretary James Cleverly said global insecurity and war on mainland Europe had highlighted the fact Britain had spent years thinking “we're too clever” to have to worry about food security.

He told a Save British Farming rally in Westminster that while food shortages were not likely, they were “not impossible”.

Mr Cleverly said: “I think one of the problems we've had for decades is we've stopped being scared about the things we should be scared of, because we haven't had sustained food shortages in the UK in living memory.
