Found...haunting loving letters home from D-Day hero
Daily Express
|March 23, 2024
THE last letter home written by a soldier 48 hours before he was killed on D-Day told his family “not to worry – I’ll be all right”.
His words, neatly written with a blue fountain pen, suggest he was unaware of the horrors he was to face.
Corporal Harry Arthur Brown penned the dispatch on June 4, 1944, to his wife Harriet Agnes and children Ray, four, and Diann Johnston, who was just one.
The Royal Engineer wrote: “Darling, surely we will see the end of this war before many more moons have passed. It just can’t go on forever, can it sweetheart?
Amazed
“Take care my three darlings. With all the love in the world from your always and every loving sweetheart.
“Take care of yourselves, please don’t worry too much about me. I will be all right my darlings.”
The letter was unearthed in Diann’s brother’s loft in Yarm, North Yorkshire, by nephews Karl and Gavin Brown.
