Crossings hit new record

A RECORD 872 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday - the highest one-day figure so far this year.
They made the journey in 15 vessels - suggesting an average of 58 people per boat. The cumulative number of arrivals by small boats this year now stands at a provisional total of 20,973.
The previous high was when 756 people made crossings on August 10.
However, the total for the year so far is still lower than this time in 2022, when 25,000 people had already made the journey.
The record for a single day since current records began in 2018 is 1,295, made on August 22 last year.
