Constance: I did nothing but show my baby love

ARISTOCRAT Constance Marten has denied harming her newborn daughter, telling the Old Bailey yesterday: "I did nothing but show her love."

Appearing in the witness box for the first time, she added: "I gave her the best that any mother would." Marten, 36, who is on trial over the baby's death, told jurors she did not expose her to cold, or allow her to get too hot, so far as she was aware.

But baby Victoria - who was born in a rented cottage in Park View, Northumberland, on Christmas Eve 2022 - died in a tent three weeks later on January 9 last year, Marten said.

Breaking down in tears, she added: "I do not think it is anything I will ever move on from. I feel guilty because she was in my arms."
