Begum wants to exploit 'any error' to get UK citizenship

The former Islamic State bride, 24, believes if she wins her case, the UK is unlikely to revoke her citizenship a second time as this would render her stateless, the London court heard.

When the Home Office made the original decision in 2019, it argued she automatically had Bangladeshi citizenship due to her parents being nationals of the country.

However, this no longer applies. If Bangladeshi dual nationals do not make an active effort to retain citizenship, it lapses when they turn 21.

Sir James Eadie KC, representing the Home Office, said: "The position as we understand it now is that Ms Begum is no longer a dual citizen.
