Battle of Orgreave inquiry to begin

A PUBLIC inquiry into the violent confrontation at Orgreave during the 1984 miners’ strike is set to be launched in the autumn.

The government-backed probe is expected to investigate events around clashes at the Orgreave Coking Plant in South Yorkshire on June 18, 1984, in which 120 were injured.

Some 95 picketers, led by union chief Arthur Scargill, were arrested and charged with riot and violent disorder, but these were later dropped after evidence was discredited.
