Death of Victims’ Commissioner at 63

- ANAHITA HOSSEIN-POUR

Baroness Newlove was 'a brave and wonderful soul'

BARONESS Helen Newlove, the Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales who started campaigning after her husband's murder, has died aged 63.

Tributes from across the party divides were paid to the Tory peer, described as a “brave and wonderful soul”.

She died after a short illness, her office said yesterday.

Baroness Newlove twice served in the post after becoming a campaigner in the wake of the killing of her husband Garry when he confronted vandals outside their Warrington home in 2007.

Three teenagers were convicted of his murder in 2008 and her work against persistent antisocial behaviour and youth violence led to her being made a life peer in 2010.

Baroness Newlove was due to serve as Victims’ Commissioner until the end of this year after being reappointed in October 2023.
