Asylum appeal figures double over last year

THE backlog of asylum appeals is now greater than the backlog of cases waiting for an initial decision on an application.
There were 69,670 cases in the asylum appeals waiting list at the end of September, according to Ministry of Justice data out yesterday.
This was more than twice the number at the same point last year, when it was 34,234.
It is also higher than cases awaiting an initial decision.
