A doyenne of modern manners

SHE was known as “the dowager of etiquette” but began her 70 year career in national print journalism as “a plucky girl reporter” on the Daily Express.

Beyfus made it to Fleet Street at 21 and “game for anything” at the Express — talked her way on to an RAF plane airlifting coal to the Soviet-blockaded, East German city of Berlin, dirty but triumphant.

However, she became much better known as an observer of changing fashions and modern manners in postwar Britain, about which she wrote several books.

Her first solo volume was The English Marriage in 1968.
