DOUG King has spoken about his working relationship with Frank Lampard and what he feels is the secret of Coventry City’s relative success in continuing to knock on the door of promotion.

- By ANDY TURNER

The Sky Blues have made it to the playoffs twice and narrowly missed out the year they got to the semifinal of the FA Cup at Wembley in King’s first few years at the helm, and the club have now put themselves in with the chance of going one better after a “sensational” start to the 2025/26 campaign.

Speaking on the Jim White and Simon Jordan show on talkSPORT, the executive chairman was asked about his relationship with Lampard, who he appointed a year ago.

“Listen, I think coming in mid-season as he did was always going to be tricky and the start was all about getting a flavour of the whole thing and then as we got to the start of this year things became clearer,” he said.

“We have always had a good relationship. We're very direct and we're very honest, and we get on with what we have to get one with. He tells me what we need to do and I think we're more like a business rather than an owner who may be a bit random, so we try to keep it nice and logical, and nice and clear.

“We're a small team and we get on great. And he’s done an amazing job and I just saw 46 games, 92 points and a season of two points a game is sensational in anyone's language. “Look, we know it’s there and we know there’s a long way to go. Nothing’s done yet but we're excited at where we are because normally we're about 15th or 16th at this time of the year.”
