Demolition of old baths moves closer

COVENTRY City Council has moved a step closer to knocking down the former swimming baths in Fairfax Street but it could be years before the bulldozers move in.

In addition to the annual £400,000 security and maintenance bill, it has been revealed that it will cost another £514,000 just to prepare and submit the listed building application before demolition work can begin.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that while the grade II listed building is set for demolition, the attached Elephant Leisure Centre is to remain and the buildings share a heating system and other services.

Council chiefs remain confident of finding a new use for the iconic building.
