FIRST OPENING AWAY LEAGUE WIN SINCE 2017 AS GOALS GIVE CONFIDENCE FOR REST

- By ANDY TURNER Sky Blues Reporter

COVENTRY City wowed their 3,000-strong travelling fans by going from 3-2 down to 5-3 up in the space of seven second-half minutes at bogey ground Pride Park.

The Sky Blues looked on course for a decent result after twice taking the lead through Bobby Thomas and a Haji Wright penalty in a frantic first half at Derby, only for the Rams to pull level on each occasion to ensure the two sides went in all square at the break.

And although John Eustace’s men grabbed the lead in the second half, further goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante, Ephron Mason-Clark and Victor Torp sealed the memorable away day on Frank Lampard’s second return to his former club. Here are some of the big talking points from the game.

Hot coral inspired

Not for the first time since Frank Lampard has been in charge at Coventry City his team brought an end to a dreadful record. Pride Park has been somewhat of a bogey ground for the Sky Blues who travelled to Derby having not won in their previous ten visits.

However, looking resplendent in their new eye-catching Monzo-inspired hot coral away kit, Lampard’s men took the game to the Rams, taking the lead twice in the first half before being pegged back to level terms and, despite going a goal behind for the first time after the break, bounced back with three killer goals in the space of seven scintillating minutes to secure a brilliant three points.

The win was also the first time City have won their opening away league game of the season since 2017 when they were victorious at Grimsby Town.
