The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has ramped up its fight against reckless behaviour on the roads, nabbing 173 drivers for operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol in just one week.
-
This crackdown, running from 8 December to 14 December 2025, forms part of the ongoing Tshela Thupa operations aimed at making streets safer during the busy festive period. With families hitting the highways and parties in full swing, officials are sending a strong message that putting lives at risk will not be tolerated.
These arrests come amid rising concerns over road deaths, where alcohol plays a big role in crashes.
Across Gauteng, similar efforts have seen hundreds pulled over, showing how widespread the problem is. As the festive cheer builds, many are reminded that one bad choice behind the wheel can shatter lives forever. The department's top brass has called on everyone to think twice before mixing drinks with driving, stressing that safety starts with each person.
This latest haul adds to a worrying trend, with previous weeks seeing even higher numbers, like 182 arrests in the first seven days of the month alone
It highlights the need for ongoing vigilance as more people travel for holidays, gatherings, and year-end fun.
Breakdown of the Recent Arrests
Between Monday, 8 December, and Sunday, 14 December 2025, JMPD officers carried out stepped-up roadblocks, moving patrols, and spot checks in every corner of Johannesburg. These actions zeroed in on drivers showing signs of impairment, leading to the 173 arrests for driving under the influence. The operations are designed to catch offenders early and prevent accidents before they happen.
