Nationwide strike paralysis normal life in Manipur

Normal life was partially affected in Manipur today due to a nationwide strike called by various trade unions who are opposing the “anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government.

The Manipur Government Services' Federation (MGSF) and the Manipur State Pensioners' Union (MSPU), Petroleum tanker drivers union, medical sales representative association, Left parties and other organisations extended their support to the strike announced by ten Central Trade Unions.

Most of the business establishments were closed down, and intrastate passenger services were cancelled; however, educational institutes were not affected by the strike. There was no report of any untoward incident.

Sit-in protests were also organised by the All Manipur Banking Association in front of Imphal Urban Cooperative Bank in Imphal.

Those who took part in the protests said the protests were participated in by India's sectoral federations and associations of Employees of central and state governments, banks, BSNL, Postal, Insurance, AG, Transport, School, College and University teachers etc.

The general strike has been called mainly against the implementation of the labour codes, which are a key part of the corporate agenda aimed at severely curtailing the basic democratic rights of workers, including their right to organise and undertake collective action.
