JN.1 Covid-19 Variant Triggers Fresh Wave in South-East Asia and India

A fresh wave of Covid-19 infections across South-East Asia and India has been attributed to the JN.1 variant of the Omicron lineage. Evolving from the BA.2.86 strain—also known as “Pirola"—the JN.1 variant was first identified in Luxembourg in August 2023. It has since developed three sub-variants: NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and LP.8.1.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), JN.1 was designated a “Variant of Interest” in December 2023. While it has not yet been classified as a “Variant of Concern,” the virus has shown significant capability for rapid spread and immune evasion.
India is witnessing a growing number of JN.1 cases. As of May 26, 2025, over 1.000 confirmed cases have been reported, with hotspots emerging in states including Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi, according to data from the Indian SARS Covid-19 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
