THE pursuit of revenue is slowly eroding the moral fabric of our nation, and nowhere is this more evident than in the state’s hesitant approach to the wild west arena of online gambling.

Recent deliberations in the Kwa-Zulu-Natal legislature have revealed a troubling contrast: while gambling taxes have swelled provincial coffers to the tune of hundreds of millions of rands, this financial gain has come at a devastating price for the well-being of our most vulnerable communities. It is a classic case where short-term fiscal relief is traded for long-term social ruin, and we must demand that our authorities put people before profits.
