GRESLEY Rovers gave themselves the ideal tonic after their opening day defeat by beating Melton Town 2-1 at home on Tuesday night.

They were on top from the early stages but, after a goalless first half, eventually had to come from behind for three points in UCL Premier Division North.

The Moatmen took control almost from the off, with Sam Moore forcing visiting keeper Jake Alley to make an early save pushing a well-struck shot wide.

From the resulting corner Fin Barker went close, shooting wide.

Another decent chance for the home side came after 16 minutes when Jenson Cooper broke through Melton’s back line but a deflection on his shot took it wide for another corner.

After 26 minutes, the visitors were down to 10 men.

Barker burst past Ferdinand Bartley to have a clear run at goal and was scythed down.

Referee Lewis Saunders-Johnson had no doubt about showing the red card.
