YOUNGSTERS donned their water wings and were put through their paces in March 1997 as the Meadowside Leisure Centre launched a 10-day swimming course.
This was the 13th time the Burton Mail-organised “learn to swim” campaign had been held to help ensure all children of school age could swim safely.
The course was instantly oversubscribed, with more than 120 children taking to the water for the first time on the first day of the scheme.
Julie Bennett, the mum of five-year-old Joe said her son had been keen to get started with learning to swim.
