Families urged to 'commemorate this important moment in our world's history'

VJ DAY EVENTS ARE TAKING PLACE ACROSS COUNTY

PEOPLE in East Staffordshire are being urdge to join today's countywide VJ Day celebrations.

The National Memorial Arboretum is hosting a special commemorative event on what is the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, marking Japan's surrender in the Second World War.

While the Armed Forces Memorial at the arboretum will be closed to the public, visitors can view a screening of the event on the grounds.

Hayley Coles, above, cabinet member for communities and culture at Staffordshire County Council, said: "As we celebrate VJ Day and the relief it brought to millions after six years of warfare, we must remember the terrible toll that came even in that victory.
