A CANOE race along the Trent and Mersey canal in September 1981 proved so successful organisers hoped to make it an annual event.

Canoe race added spice to the calm canal waters

The event was open to anyone in the country but only canoeists from Burton Canoe Club answered the call.

Altogether 15 adults and children took part in the four-mile race from Stretton to Stenson Marina with Burton's mayor councillor Don Furniss officially starting the race.
