Teachers that left a lasting impact
Bristol Post

It's Back To School week in Bristol Times! And to lift the spirits of those returning to the chalk-face, and to prove there's life beyond the classroom, we thought we'd look at a few local teachers from the recent and distant past who achieved great things.
-
Anton Bantock (1932-2015)
Head of history for many years at Bedminster Down School, and a hugely-popular teacher. In later life he was well-known as a local historian and as founder of the University of Withywood. If you don't know of him, the citation from when he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Bristol University will tell the whole story. See https://tinyurl.com/2wd8wspe
John Atyeo (1932-1993)
Born in Wiltshire, Atyeo excelled at sports at school and went on to a career with Bristol City FC. His later career was part-time as he was also working as a teacher of maths, something he took up full-time (at Kingdown School, Warminster) after retiring. He remains a City legend because he never left, turning down offers from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and AC Milan. A few months before he died he appeared at Ashton Gate to make a raffle draw at half time. The ovation he got lasted for most of the interval.
Marian Fry Pease (1859-1954)
Bristol University celebrates its 150th birthday next year as the University College was founded in 1876. Three young women - Marian Pease, Emily Pakeman and Amy Bell - were admitted when it opened its doors, a radical development at a time when women weren't expected to attend universities.
She completed her studies, though she was not able to graduate until 1911. She became a teacher, and went on campaign for education for women in Bristol, opening an open air school, a club for girls working at the Great Western Cotton Factory in Barton Hill and the University Settlement at Barton Hill.
