The waste has been piling up by university accommodations near the University of the West of England’s Frenchay campus in Bristol.

Residents of Cheswick Village, Scholar’s Chase and Stoke Park say the rubbish often spills over into the road attracting rats and foxes.

The problem has been a constant in the area and has led to rodent infestations and to wildlife eating food from ripped open bins.

They blame South Gloucestershire Council for a lack of enforcement and claim some people were forced to move away.

With the return of students to the new academic year, locals say the issue is getting worse and has forced some people to even leave the area completely.

Caroline Lines, 61, who lives in Scholars Chase said it is “disgusting” to live next to rubbish and “smelly” ripped open bins.

She said: “Going back to the beginning of the summer it was so bad because we had all the warm weather the smell was so bad.

“The council won't do anything.

“My grandsons were coming back from the park and they were hysterical because two rats actually ran out in front of them in the street near an HMO property where there is a lot of rubbish.

“Black plastic bags have been ripped opened by wildlife and they were terrified.”

With the return of students, Ms Lines says the issue is now even worse.
