'Racist chants' City fined £7,500 over abuse from minority of fans

BRISTOL City have been fined £7,500 after a “small minority of fans” chanted “overtly racist abuse” aimed at Cardiff City’s owner.

The FA charge relates to last October's Severnside derby at Ashton Gate with Cardiff City, when it was alleged the Robins had “failed to ensure its spectators and/ or supporters conduct themselves in an orderly fashion’.

That contest in October finished 1-1 but was marred by derogatory chants about Cardiff’s owner Vincent Tan, it was alleged, and following a charge being levelled against the Robins in February, the Ashton Gate club have now been punished.

Setting out the events in its report, the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission said: “The facts of the case are very straightforward. It is accepted that around the 27th and 80th minutes of the fixture BCFC supporters engaged in chanting directed at the Cardiff City fans.”

The report said video evidence showed Robins fans engaging in an “overtly racist” chant about Mr Tan, who is of Malaysian heritage.
