Hope restored Inspirational Ivy, 9, battling back from total paralysis
Bristol Post
|October 01, 2025
NINE-YEAR-OLD Ivy Amos is back at school, achieving a milestone that seemed impossible just months ago - walking with the aid of a frame.
Ivy Amos with her mum Georgia, and below in hospital - Ivy was left paralysed from the neck down by transverse myelitis last year but has just started back at school in Year 5 with the support of a Bristol charity
Her inspiring story began with a sudden and devastating diagnosis of transverse myelitis in February 2024, a rare neurological condition caused by severe inflammation of the spinal cord.
Ivy, always a “happy, healthy” girl, was abruptly left paralysed from the neck down.
Her remarkable progress is not just a testament to her determination, but to the dedicated, specialist activity-based rehabilitation she received from the Bradley Stoke-based charity Neurokinex.
Her mother, Georgia Wynes, calls the facility a vital “lifeline”, which has provided the expertise needed to bridge the gap between initial hospital care and true recovery.
The crisis unfolded when Ivy, then eight, was rushed to Bristol Children's Hospital after a serious seizure and was initially diagnosed with viral meningitis.
Although she was discharged with antibiotics and seemed to recover, Georgia’s maternal instinct made her feel “something wasn’t right”.
