DA calls for probe into 'irregularities at muni'

THE DA has called on the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, to urgently launch an investigation into what they refer to as malpractice and abuse of power in the Mogalakwena Municipality.

The request was made under Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act, which allows for intervention when serious allegations of maladministration or corruption arise.

DA councillor Yolande Coetzee said the party is concerned about an incident that happened during a virtual Executive Committee (Exco) meeting held on May 21. According to Coetzee, Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala introduced an unscheduled agenda item during the meeting, recommending the precautionary suspension of two senior managers.

She alleges the reports were vague and unsupported by evidence, and councillors who attempted to object or request discussion were removed from the virtual meeting platform during the item's presentation.
