Wynyard's elegance and Williams' charm lit up stage for generations

We're nearing the end of the A to Z of star actors who trod the boards on Blackpool stages in the 20th century.

Regular readers will know we are at surnames starting with the letter W.

Diana Wynyard (1906-64) learned her craft with the Liverpool Playhouse Company from 1927 to 29, when Rex Harrison was also a member.

Ten years later, as stars, they toured in two comedies that came to Blackpool's Grand Theatre prior to London seasons.

The first, in September, 1939, was in Noel Coward's menage-a-trois Design For Living, with Anton Walbrook.

The second was No Time for Comedy, by the American humourist S. N Behrman, at the end of 1940.

An earlier Blackpool visit by Diana Wynyard had been in Joyce Carey's comedy Sweet Aloes, at the Grand in April, 1936.
