Sewage released into waterways

Water companies are allowed to discharge untreated sewage and waste water into rivers and canals when the sewerage system gets overloaded.

Discharges are made via Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), which are typically located along rivers and canals, and usually take place after periods of heavy rainfall.

Severn Trent owns and maintains the CSOs in the West Midlands.
