CALL ON LEADERS TO RESTORE LIGHTING AMID SAFETY CONCERNS

Campaigners say city streets are too dark

Stephenson Street is mostly lit by lights from nearby businesses only

BIRMINGHAM City Council cuts have left some of the city centre's busiest areas in darkness.

Many city centre visitors and residents said they feel "unsafe" at night especially after the shocking death of Katie Fox last week, who was stabbed near the Bullring.

Despite a previous Mail campaign to restore lighting along sections of Corporation Street, the major pedestrian route is once again dotted with dark spots.

Stephenson Street outside McDonald's on the ramp relies almost entirely on the glow from the fast-food chain.

Rotunda Square outside the Bullring, and the steps leading to Moor Street station, are cloaked in shadow.

The tunnel connecting Moor Street and Smallbrook Queensway where Katie Fox was fatally stabbed 10 days ago - is chillingly dim.

Even New Street station's huge LED 'eye' screens - once a beacon of brightness - have been switched off for years.

City centre visitor Tom Jones, from Sutton Coldfield, said the gateway into Digbeth from the centre is a "disgrace" "The city should be ashamed," he said.
