Campaign to ringfence region’s speeding fines

LEADERS WANT INCOME USED FOR LOCAL SAFETY SCHEMES

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster
YEARS of campaigning to change “broken” rules so police and councils can keep locally-generated speeding fines to pay for road safety measures could soon get the green light.
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster has been leading the fight to keep fines local.
Now, he has secured the support of 35 senior leaders across policing, local government and road safety partnerships nationwide, who all agree there needs to be an urgent review of the speed enforcement rules.
If they succeed, the money generated could fund more speed cameras and other measures to make roads safer.
In a joint letter issued to Government, they are calling for a West Midlands-led trial.
An estimated £2.3 million a year in fines is levied on errant motorists in the region in fixed penalties. None of it comes back directly to the region.
